Tromblay Salon and
Gallery opened on April
1, 1992. Owners Albert and Susan Trombley renovated the J.W. Bosman Building
(1909) at the corner of Burdick and Dutton streets in downtown Kalamazoo. What
was formerly a soda fountain, laundromat,
and appliance store has now been transformed into a colorful and
comforting space for peerless salon services, boutique shopping, and
local art exhibitions. Don't miss the charming details of this space,
including original tin ceilings, our vintage styling chairs, and
more!
Albert is a 28 year
veteran hair stylist. Albert's many years of experience and study
have honed his skills, resulting in some of the most technically
excellent and unique hairstyles around. Albert loves to do hair
cutting and hair coloring makeovers, and likes a challenge. Part of
his sterling reputation includes his work as an instructor, and we
can all attest to the great knowledge gleaned from working with
Albert. He's fun and focused, and takes great joy in sharing his art.
Susan's artful eye is evident in work
as buyer and creative designer for the shop at Tromblay.
Susan is our fearless leader and business mastermind. She and Albert
are parents to Ella and Oscar - frequent visitors!
Rhoda
chose a career in hair design 20 years ago because she loves art and
working with her hands. She is a master of the latest cutting and
color techniques and enjoys helping mature women use fabulous
haircuts and their changing hair color to maximum advantage. Rhoda
makes it a point to pamper clients who come in for color services,
recognizing that time at Tromblay is often
a rare breather from their hectic schedules. Low-key and
approachable, Rhoda is a great listener who enjoys getting to know
people. Her four-legged “clients” find her easy to get
along with too—three horses—including one
mini—share Rhoda’s home in the country.
Judy joined
Tromblay in 2003 when she moved to Kalamazoo from Connecticut. A hair stylist for
more than 30 years, she has built a loyal clientele who appreciate
her gentle, understated approach. Though Judy insists she’s
conservative when it comes to fashion, she can dish out the latest
short and long styles. She offers color services, facial waxing and
manicures, too. Anyone touched by Judy’s wholesome spirit
won’t be surprised that she grew up on a farm in Nebraska. Judy
says, “I chose this line of work because I wanted to work with
people and improve my own looks and my own confidence.” Now she
helps clients do the same.
Alicia
came to Tromblay nearly two years ago, but
she may not look familiar.
That’s because this trend-setter changes her hair style
every month or so—and color too: pink, purple,
yellow, green—you name it! Alicia especially likes short
haircuts because they let her see her clients more often. With their
input, she keeps their look fresh and current. Alicia values the
teamwork at the salon, saying, “We stylists expect to
receive each other’s input on what’s best for our
clients, and that openness allows us to be more creative.”
Curious, confident and always learning, Alicia is passionate helping
her clients shine. She also loves reading, yoga and zipping around
town on her Moped.
Ashley
has been at Tromblay just one year, but
says a career in hair design “chose her” a decade ago
when she started cutting and coloring her friends’ hair in
middle school! That make-over impulse is still alive and well—Ashley
loves learning about her clients’ personalities and lifestyles
so she can help make a dramatic impact in their lives. She provides
facial waxing and manicure services, as well. Passionate, caring and
excited about life, Ashley finds time to take college classes and
play basketball but says she’ll never be far from the salon:
“I love change, I love what’s modern. I love to help
people create their own dynamic, personal style.”
Tessa
has begun a two-year training program with Albert. She says that she
is enjoying “every aspect” of salon operations,
especially meeting Tromblay clients one shampoo at a time! Tessa is mastering
the complexities of cut and color, and she’s learning how to
ask the questions that help clients verbalize what they want to see
when they look in the mirror. When you see Tessa, see if you can
stump her with movie trivia—she’s a huge film buff who
and especially loves old and foreign films. If you would like a great haircut at a reduced fee and
don’t mind spending a little more time while Tessa and Albert
create your look together, call for an appointment.
